Sleep.

A function of the body that is often taken for granted or not serious enough.

College students pulling all-nighters to prepare for an exam.

Writers who get all the words down before starting over again the next day.

Coffee becomes a necessity (which leads to a whole new set of health issues) rather than a morning pick-me-up.

Suddenly and without warning, the body begins to crash and you’re left with more time spent on recovering than you originally planned for.

In today’s article, you’ll learn all about sleep.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS TO CONSIDER IF I FEEL I MAY HAVE A SLEEPING PROBLEM?

For those of you who love to “burn the midnight oil” or don’t take sleeping seriously, read what I learned from an article by Healthline and discover what can happen to you if you don’t get enough sleep.

  • Stark Raving Mad: A lack of sleep can make you an emotional wreck. You become quicker with your temper, moodier, and that’s someone no one wants to be around.
  • I Forgot: While you’re in full sleep mode, your brain establishes connections to help you retain what you learned that day. Deny sleep, and kiss most of what you wanted to remember goodbye.
  • Defenses Are Down: With a lack of sleep, you weaken your immune system and that makes you susceptible to viruses that can cause you to be wasting your day trying to recover from sickness.

And these are just three of the problems! Go to the Healthline article mentioned here to find out what other surprises your lack of sleep gives you.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF SLEEPING ISSUES?

Now that you’ve had a taste of what you’re doing to yourself when you deny your body the sleep it needs, now you’ll understand how you’re more than likely not getting the sleep you need.

  1. Technology: That cell phone that you can’t seem to put down. That TV that ends up watching you, That computer game that you just have to reach the next level on before you crash. All of these are making the sleep you need almost impossible to obtain. The light blue light causes your body to remain awake longer than it wants to.

SOLUTION: Turn off technology of all kinds one hour before you get your sleep. Technology seems to take over our days, don’t let it take over the nights too.

2. Fluctuating Times: When you constantly go to bed and wake up at different times, you tend to confuse your body which may have you sleep more when you want to sleep and stay awake more than you want to sleep.

SOLUTION: Develop a sleep and waking routine by going to bed and rising at the same time. Your body will thank you for it.

3. Feed Me: The more you eat at night the more your digestive system remains active. And, if your digestive system is awake, guess who else is?

SOLUTION: When it comes time to sleep and you just have to eat something before time, make it light like crackers.

But that’s not all. Read this interesting slideshow I found on WebMD to learn more ways you’re denying yourself sleep.

WHAT AT-HOME CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM SLEEP PROBLEMS?

As previously mentioned in the previous section: there are several things you can do at home to help you with your sleeping issues.

  • Set a time for sleep and wake (routine)
  • Watch what you eat (lightly snack at night)
  • Lights out (turn off technology at least one hour before sleeping)
