TODAY’S FOCUS: THE KIDNEYS

Organ Overview

In this brochure, you’ll be informed about keeping a healthy KIDNEY and the health risks involving an unhealthy KIDNEY.

What should I be concerned with?

Below is a list of three common issues of an unhealthy .KIDNEY

Kidney Stones: When the kidneys store minerals and salts in them and don’t release them into the urine flow when you urinate, they form stones that are sometimes painful to release. I get them all the time, however, I don’t feel them.

Metabolic Acidosis: Speaking of the kidneys storing too much, this issue arises from the kidneys storing too much acid.

Renal Failure: The disastrous end of the kidney. This is where too much trauma to the kidney comes from holding in too much. Sooner or later, the kidneys lose the ability to pass things through the urine altogether.

What can a doctor do for this?

In this section, you’ll learn about what the doctor can do to help you battle your unhealthy KIDNEY.

Kidney Stones- For this condition, allow time for the stone to pass through the urine. If it doesn’t, your doctor may prescribe medication that relaxes the path for the stone to go through so it can pass. If that doesn’t work, your doctor may prescribe surgery to pulverise, or remove the stone altogether. My doctor had to use a laser to make my stone small enough to pass. Then, as it passed, I felt pain.

Metabolic Acidosis- Treatment for this condition is aimed at the way the Acidosis came to be. Medication can be prescribed by your doctor to reduce the acid found in the blood.

Renal Failure- Dialysis is the main treatment for renal failure. The treatments of the different forms of dialysis aims to clean the blood of the toxins that stayed too long. If dialysis doesn’t work, your doctor may decide that the kidney needs to be replaced by another one from an organ donor.

What can I do at home in the wake of Covid-19?

Finally, we come to the section where you take charge of your health.

Thanks to Covid-19, many of us would rather not venture out into the public to prevent ourselves from contracting the Coronavirus.

Below is a small list of things you can do at home to help you win your KIDNEY back.

Kidney Stones- You need to drink plenty of fluids and limit your salt intake as well as take in the recommended amount of calcium in your diet.

Metabolic Acidosis- While Metabolic Acidosis, or any other form of Acidosis cannot always be prevented, you can follow the same steps as the stones plus limit your alcohol intake.

Renal Failure- Again, it’s important to note that all the steps listed above can make your kidneys happier with you.

NOTE: With the steps listed, you should always strive to eat healthier, maintain a healthier weight, manage your blood sugar (if you have Diabetes) and your blood pressure, along with other steps to maintain a healthy set of kidneys.
